Evacuating with your pets
Prepare for the welfare of your pets during emergency events, such as bushfires or floods. It can be a very stressful time for all involved. Some pets may take flight during an evacuation and try to make their way back home. Here are a few basic tips to put on the checklist.
- Ensure your pets always have a water supply that will last them up to 10 days. Place multiple water sources around the house. Also extra non perishable food (kibble) left in some high places in the event of flooding.
- Have a backup person to have access to your pets in case you can't make it back to your house.
- Prepare a list of boarding kennels/catteries/friends that can temporarily house your pets.
- Ensure your pets are identified with a visible marker such as collar and all microchip details are updated.
If you are able to take your pet with you to an evacuation centre have a small kit prepared for them to take with you.
- Any medication that is essential for your pet.
- Their regular food/treats/toys/blanket can help calm them when away from their normal situation.
